This process diffuses carbon atoms into the surface layers of low-alloy steel. Carburization introduces carbon deep into the outer steel layers, creating a wear-resistant case with high fatigue limits under percussive stress. Induction hardening is typically restricted to local areas and does not provide the same deep-case fatigue performance needed for drill rods and shank adapters.
